PURPOSE: To investigate changes in the dietary consumption as well as the influence of the general characteristics, of the sociodemographic, clinical and nutritional factors, and of the antineoplastic therapy on the changes in the energy intake of women from southern Brazil, before and after adjuvant therapy for breast cancer. METHODS: A non-randomized clinical study was conducted on 53 patients at a hospital of the public health network. Dietary information was collected with a food frequency questionnaire. A mixed-effects linear regression model was used to evaluate the factors that influenced longitudinal alterations of energy intake. RESULTS: A significant increase was observed in daily energy intake of fats, calcium, iron, copper, polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega 6 and omega 3, and a significant decrease in vitamin B2 intake. The final regression model for the change in energy intake showed an average increase of 19.2 kcal/month. Fruit and legume consumption showed the highest association with energy intake, with each 100 g consumed resulting in an average increase of 68.4 and 370.5 kcal, respectively. Women in the 51 to 60 year age range consumed 403.5 kcal less than those in the 31 to 50 year age range. CONCLUSION: There was an increase in energy intake during treatment and the increase in the ingestion of fruits and legumes was associated with significant increases in energy intake.

To describe the evolution of the prevalence of anemia in pregnant adolescents
attended at a public maternity in the city of Rio de Janeiro from 2004 to 2013.
A retrospective cross-sectional study with 628 pregnant/postpartum women divided
into 3 groups: Group A (2004-2006), Group B (2007-2010) and Group C (2013).
Information about anthropometric, clinical, sociodemographic data and obstetric
and prenatal care of adolescents was obtained from medical records of the pregnant
women. A hemoglobin concentration n<11 g/dL was considered to be anemia. Data
were analyzed statistically by the chi-square test, Student's t-test and ANOVA,
and the post hoc Tukey test.
The prevalence of gestational anemia over the years was 43% (GA=138), 36% (GB=80)
and 47.1% (GC=40) and the overall prevalence for the 2004-2013 period was 41.1%
(n=258). The occurrence of anemic pregnant women increased with the progression of
pregnancy; however, in the 3rd quarter there was a decrease in the prevalence of
anemia in GB (29.3%) compared to GA (38.7%; p=0.04). Factors associated with
anemia were number of prenatal visits and prenatal nutritional assistance, place
of residence, pre-pregnancy BMI, and gestational weight gain.
The results showed that the prevalence of anemia among pregnant adolescents seen
at a public maternity is high. There was no reduction of anemia during the study
period and other factors in addition to iron deficiency were involved in the
genesis of anemia in this population.

PURPOSE: to test effectiveness and safety of the oral administration of a new misoprostol formulation in titrated doses for the induction of delivery of a live fetus at term. METHODS: an open pilot multicenter, non-randomized clinical trial was conducted from July to December 2008. A total of 30 patients with indications for induction of labor were included. The patients had a live fetus, Bishop score <6, vertex presentation, fetal weight <4,000g estimated by ultrasonography and amniotic fluid index >5. Exclusion criteria were previous uterine scar, non-reassuring fetal heart rate tracing, multiple pregnancy, fetal growth restriction, genital hemorrhage and presence of genital tumors, ulcerations or malformations. An initial dose of 20µg/hour of the oral misoprostol solution was used in the first 6 hours, and was increased progressively to 20µg/hour every 6 hours if labor did not start, up to a maximum dose of 80µg/h in the first 24 hours, maintained for additional 24 hours if necessary. RESULTS: labor was satisfactorily induced in 96.7% of patients. The interval between the first dose and the beginning of uterine contractions was 3.8±1.8 hours. The interval between the initial dose and delivery varied from 6 to 24 hours. The frequency of vaginal delivery was 80% (24 cases). Most of the patients (60%; n=18) initiated labor with a dose of 20mg/hour. Tachysystole occurred in 13.3% of women and meconium-stained fluid was detected in 20% of cases. There were two cases of Apgar scores <7 in the first minute and no Apgar score <7 in the fifth minute. CONCLUSIONS: the oral solution of misoprostol was effective and safe for the induction of labor. However, further randomized controlled trials are needed to compare this new formulation with misoprostol administered by the vaginal route.

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis and to compare the accuracy of testing pH and KOH with the Nugent gradient, the gold standard for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in asymptomatic and symptomatic pregnant women at low risk. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 321 pregnant women with gestational age between 14 and 26 weeks, 218 of them asymptomatic and 103 with vaginal complaints suggestive of bacterial vaginosis. All women were assessed by the criteria of Nugent and subjected to the measurement of vaginal pH and to the 10% KOH test. The Kappa coefficient was used to evaluate the methods in terms of diagnostic agreement. RESULTS: Most patients were adolescents (mean age 21.0±5.6 years), nulliparous and mulattos. The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was 33.3% as estimated by the pH and KOH method and 35.5% by the Nugent method. Excellent agreement of the methods was found among asymptomatic pregnant women, with 72.5% of them showing negative results to both tests, which resulted in a high Kappa coefficient (k=0.82). The group of symptomatic women showed 49.5% positivity to both diagnostic methods, with excellent agreement (k=0.74). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis determined by both the pH and KOH method and the Nugent score was high. The pH and KOH method can diagnose bacterial vaginosis as accurately as the Nugent criterion.

Purpose: to observe the circadian pattern of blood pressure variation in normotensive and hypertensive pregnant women, assessing the occurrence of nocturnal blood pressure decrease, as well as the compliance with the method and possible complications. Methods: the blood pressure measurement was carried out in seventeen normotensive and fourteen hypertensive pregnant women at the Hospital das Clínicas of UFMG. Blood pressure was measured on two different occasions during gestation using the oscillometric technique to compare both groups. Results: in both groups nocturnal decrease in blood pressure as well as an increase in pressure levels was observed as pregnancy advanced. No significant complications were seen and they did not interfere with compliance which was 100%. Conclusions: the ambulatory blood pressure measurement is useful to evaluate pressure variation in normotensive and hypertensive pregnant women confirming the gradual increase in blood pressure throughout pregnancy and the nocturnal physiologic decrease which does not depend on maternal pressure levels.
