The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of propoxyphene napsylate on the pregnancy of the rat. We used fifty pregnant rats divided into five groups. All the animals received daily 1 ml of the solution by gavage from day 0 to the 20th day of pregnancy. Group I - only distilled water (control); group II - aqueous solution of acacia 2% (vehicle); groups III, IV and V - respectively, 5, 15 and 45 mg/kg of weight of propoxyphene napsylate diluted in 2% acacia solution. The animals were weighed on days 0, 7, 14 and 20 of pregnancy. All animals were sacrificed on the 20th day of pregnancy. Our results showed that the animals treated with 45 mg/kg of propoxyphene napsylate presented reduction of the individual weights of the fetuses, as well as of the weights of the newborns and placentas. The difference betewwn number of resorptions, implantations and placentas of the treated groups was shown to be non significant cohen compered with the control groups.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on the pregnancy of female albino rats. We used 60 pregnant female rats which were divided into six groups of ten cache. All the animals received daily by gavage, from the 5th (day zero) until the 20th day of pregnancy, 1 ml of the following: Group I - only distilled water (control); Group II - 0.2% aqueous solution of carboxymethylcellulose (vehicle); Groups III, IV, V and VI - 1, 10, 100 and 400 mg/kg body weight respectively, of ASA diluted in 0.2% carboxymethylcellulose solution. The animals were weighed on days 0, 7, 14 and 20 of pregnancy. Our results showed that the animals treated with 100 mg of ASA presented a reduction in the number of live newborns. The animals treated with 400 mg/kg/day presented not only a reduction in the number of live newborns but also decrease in maternal, newborn and placental weight.

Purpose: to evaluate the chronic action of primaquine diphosphate on the pregnancy of female albino rats. Methods: sixty pregnant female rats, separated into six groups, were used. Group I received daily, by gavage, 1 ml of distilled water from day zero to the 20th day of pregnancy (control group). The female rats of the other groups also received daily, by gavage, during the same period of time the volume of 1 ml containing gradually concentrated primaquine diphosphate solution: 0.25 mg/kg, group II; 0.50 mg/kg, group III; 0.75 mg/kg, group IV; 1.5 mg/kg, group V and 3.0 mg/kg, group VI. The maternal weights were considered on day zero and on the 7th, 14th and 20th days of pregnancy, when the matrices were sacrificed. Results: the results showed that primaquine diphosphate, in the used doses, did not interfere with none of the following variables: maternal weight, newborn weight, medium individual weight of fetuses, weight of the group of placentas and medium individual weight of the placentas, implantation number, number of placentas and number of fetuses, when compared with the control group. Also there was no case of reabsorption, malformation, maternal mortality or intrauterine death, in any of the studied groups. Conclusion: in the conditions of the study there were no contraindications for the continuous use of primaquine diphosphate during the pregnancy of the female rat.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by tremor, stiffness of the musculature, bradykinesia, and postural and march abnormalities. It attacks all ethnic groups, with no sex preference, frequently in the 45-50-year range. The diagnosis is essentially clinical. The association with pregnancy is rare. The experience with that association is scarse, some questions remaining without answer. The authors describe a case of Parkinson's disease and gestation with satisfactory evolution, in spite of the clinical worsening during pregnancy. The mother presented elevation of blood pressure levels, alterations of the hepatic enzymes, and oligohydramnios. She used, independently, selegiline until the third month, and, later on, amantadine. The newborn presented low weight, respiratory distress and jaundice, being discharged from the hospital, with no other complications, on the fourth day of life.

Purpose: to study the effects of ciprofloxacin on abortion percentage, maternal weight gain during pregnancy, fetal and maternal death, gross fetal malformation, newborn number, weight and neurological reflexes. Methods: we used 30 Wistar rats, divided into three groups: D50-treated (ciprofloxacin, 50 mg/kg); D100-treated (ciprofloxacin 100 mg/kg) and control group which received physiological saline per os, from the 1st to the 7th day after mating. We studied abortion percentage, maternal weight gain during pregnancy, fetal and maternal death, gross fetal malformation, newborn number and weight at 1st, 3rd, 5th and 10th day of life and newborn neurological reflexes at 1st, 3rd, 5th and 10th day of life. Results: there was no difference between groups in the number of rats that became pregnant. The same was found for maternal weight gain and newborn number. There was a difference in newborn mean weight on day 3rd, 5th and 10th (p = 0.006, 0.01 and 0.03, respectively). The D100 newborn group was the one with less weight gain up to the 10th day of life. We found a significant difference (p = 0.002) in the newborn orientation reflex on the 1st day of life, that disappeared afterwards. No abortion or gross malformation was found in this study. Conclusions: ciprofloxacin modified the newborn weight and reflex on the first days of life. In conclusion, we consider that the use of ciprofloxacin should be restricted during the pregnancy.
